It’s the weekend, so it’s time to relax, sit back with a cup of coffee (or tea) and watch some classic car shows. While Top Gear is my usual go-to, I always love a good Wheeler Dealers episode.
Wheeler Dealers is one of the most beloved car shows, thanks to a great combination of Mike Brewer and Edd China, when that was the old host combination. One of the classic episodes with that combo featured Brewer buying a very cheap Mk1 Audi TT that seemed to be in great condition. Except it did have one major issue.
When they finally got it to the shop, Brewer informed mechanic specialist Edd China that the first two gears in its six-speed gearbox did not work. That’s not really the easiest fix and could have costed the duo quite a bit of money. However, China, being the clever mechanic he is, was able to open up the gearbox and notice that the problem was actually rather simple.
The selector fork for first and second gear somehow broke off and, miraculously, didn’t get caught in the spinning gears. So China was able to reattach the selector fork to get the gearbox up and running properly again, with a relatively easy fix. Admittedly, it looks easy when an excellent mechanic works on it with the magic of television editing but it’s still simpler and cheaper than rebuilding the entire gearbox and/or replacing it.
This YouTube video only has the first part of the episode but all classic Wheeler Dealer episodes can be found on Motor Trend On Demand. There’s a free seven day trial for MT, if you want to try it and check out all of the great car shows they have, such as Wheeler Dealers and Top Gear. Not a bad way to spend a relaxing weekend, is it?
