WhatCar Used Car Test: Audi SQ5 vs Mercedes-AMG GLC43

It’s actually been a couple of years since both the Audi SQ5 and the Mercedes-AMG GLC43 have been on sale. Time flies, apparently. Now that both cars have a few years under their belts, some of them are beginning to pop up on the second-hand market. That makes them more appealing to a lot of buyers than they were when new. So which car is the better used performance SUV deal?

WhatCar recently put both cars up against each other to find out. From Ingolstadt, the Audi SQ5 packs a 3.0 liter turbocharged V6 with 354 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. From Stuttgart, the Mercedes-AMG GLC43 uses a 3.0 liter turbocharged V6 to make 362 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque. Both cars have automatic gearboxes and both have all-wheel drive. So which is best?

We don’t want to spoil the outcome for you, as you should go and read WhatCar’s review, but they’re two very different cars despite having a lot of similarities on the spec sheet. Being the more powerful car, the AMG is the faster of the two. It’s the more brutish as well. While the Audi SQ5 is a bit more nimble in corners and rides a bit nicer. Though, the AMG, with its more raucous exhaust note, is a bit more exciting.

The Audi SQ5 makes up for some of its lack of excitement by having a better interior and better technology. That’s important for buyers in this segment, as performance SUVs still need to be comfortable and practical family haulers. That’s actually sort of their main goal, with performance coming second.
