Volkswagen puts the blame on employee misconduct for Dieselgate

Volkswagen has released more details about the ongoing investigation concerning the Dieselgate.

As it turns out, there were three factors that “contributed” in the huge emissions scandal: “misconduct and shortcomings of individual employees”, “mindset in some areas of the company that tolerated breaches of rules”, and weaknesses in “some processes.” To be more exact, VW mentions several deficiencies favored misconduct, especially during the testing and certification done for the engine control devices.

Volkswagen goes on to specify the processes were “not suited” to prevent the use of illegal devices, but they are already working on a fix. In addition, future software developed for the engine emissions control devices will be elaborated using the “4-eyes principle” which refers to having at least two people involved in the process.

Interestingly, VW says the problems actually started way back in 2005 when they established a strategic decision to launch more diesel cars in United States. However, it was impossible for the company to make the EA189 TDI engines pass the nitrogen oxide requirements applicable in US, so in the end special software was created to allow the cars effectively cheat during official testing.

Volkswagen has also announced some of the testing practices will be overhauled and future emissions tests will be evaluated externally by an independent party.
