Volkswagen could pull out of WRC after Audi pulled from WEC

Audi’s recent departure from the WEC (World Endurance Championship) was one that shocked the world of motorsport. The four-ringed brand had been dominating the world of WEC, winning 13 of the 18 seasons, making it the most dominant team in the sport. So when Audi decided to pull out in favor of Formula E, it was genuinely a shock. Now, it’s possible that Volkswagen will back out of WRC (World Rally Championship).

Volkswagen has actually declined to comment, so nothing is official just yet but rumors are starting to spread. In fact, Sven Smeets, Volkswagen Team Principal, did all but decline the rumors surrounding Volkswagen’s leaving WRC. “This is one, not really motorsport person, who asked the question [if VW would back out of WRC], but put in his story that Wolfsburg is in question.” Smeets told Autosport. “I don’t want to talk about these rumours or this speculation.”

So we don’t know for sure if Volkswagen will join Audi and back out of its most successful motorsport program, as VW execs seem to be denying the idea. But they also denied the idea that they were cheating emissions, too, so aren’t exactly the beacon of honesty. We hope Volkswagen doesn’t back out of WRC, because its cars are epic, but with Audi backing out of WEC, it’s certainly understandable.
