There have been a lot of cool Audis in the past, classics that we know and love today. Cars like the Audi RS2 Avant. However, almost every great Audi we know and love, new or old, owes itself to the original Audi Quattro. The Quattro was the car that started it all for Audi and it’s easily the most iconic. Which is why this new video review of one from The Smoking Tire is so great.
In this video, we get to see an owner’s original Audi Quattro, completely un-modified, get driven up and down some stunning California mountain roads. What’s great about this specific Quattro is just how original it is but also how well kept.
So sitting in this specific Audi Quattro is like stepping into a time machine. Everything looks so ’80s but it’s also in such good shape that it seems like a museum piece. Despite that, the owner doesn’t baby it and allows The Smoking Tire’s Zack Klapman to drive it surprisingly hard for such a rare classic. Even more surprising than that is the fact that is actually takes the hard driving well.
Powering the original Audi Quattro is a 2.1 liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine and it doesn’t make much power. It makes around 160 hp and probably even less torque, according to the owner. So it’s not a fast car. Instead, it’s a car that you drive because it’s enjoyable to actually drive. The engine sounds great, it has incredible grip and it just has so much presence. So while it might not be a rocket ship, it’s more than fun enough to drive.
There aren’t many cars as famous as the Quattro, in terms of motorsport. It won the WRC (World Rally Championship) multiple times and dominated in rally racing for years. So to see one so well preserved and well kept driven like this is very exciting.
