Prior to just a couple of days ago, the fastest SUV to ever lap the famed Nurburgring Nordschleife was the Mercedes-AMG GLC63 S. However, its lap time has officially been broken by an SUV that’s actually much bigger and heavier — the Audi RS Q8.
Pro Audi driver Frank Stippler piloted the RS Q8 around the ‘Ring in an astonishing 7:42.253 time, breaking the AMG’s lap time by quite an impressive 12 seconds. That lap time is a testament to the astonishing power and grip of the Audi RS Q8, considering it’s a massive SUV that weighs as much as a house.
Watch this POV video of the record-breaking lap time, though, and you might think it was done in a much smaller video. Also, credit Stippler for being an incredible driver for being able to make such an elephant dance so well. Sure, there are whiffs of understeer here and there but the Audi RS Q8 dances through the ‘Ring in a way no SUV should be able to. It’s genuinely remarkable.
Powering the Audi RS Q8 is a 4.0 liter twin-turbocharged V8, making 591 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. It’s essentially the same unit that powers the new RS6 Avant and RS7 Sportback. So it’s very, very fast. As evidenced by this video.
Maybe even more impressive than its engine and power are its tires. The Audi RS Q8 gets a new bespoke Pirelli P Zero high-performance summer tire and it clearly works well. Grip seems sensational in this video, allowing such a massive car to handle so well. Watching this video, it’s almost hard to believe that it’s an SUV doing this lap and not a smaller sports car.
We can’t wait to see the RS Q8 in the flesh and there’s a chance we might see it at the LA Auto Show in a couple of weeks. So stay tuned.
