Just last week, Audi debuted its latest Super Bowl commercial featuring the Audi e-tron Sportback being driven by Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams. In the ad, she drives the e-tron away from smoggy internal combustion while singing “Let It Go” from Frozen. The idea is, essentially, to tell us to let go of dirty internal combustion and move to cleaner EVs. I still don’t get why they used a Game of Thrones star to sing a song from Frozen but I don’t think it matters, we’re all happy to see Arya Stark back on television.
Audi recently released this new video showing a behind the scenes look at how the commercial was made and, while brief, it is interesting. It would seem like such a simple ad to make, as it’s not long and it’s mostly just Williams driving around in an Audi e-tron Sportback, singing.
However, the amount of work that went into it is really quite impressive. They got an entire orchestra from the famous Abbey Road Studios to recreate the song and had Williams actually sing it, rather than get a voice double. It actually seems quite intense. As someone who can neither sing nor act, this seems nerve-wracking.
Williams has a good point, though, and it’s that this commercial has a good message. It might not have been as enjoyable to watch as some of Audi’s previous Super Bowl commercials, such as Starman, but it sends a message that a lot of us need to hear (especially us Americans, hence its Super Bowl debut). Plus, it’s always cool seeing new cars like the Audi e-tron Sportback getting a tv spot during something as big as the Super Bowl. Audi knows damn well just how impactful a SB ad spot can be at showing off an entirely new car to the public.
