VIDEO: Watch JayEmm explore an Audi Ur Quattro

For Audi fans, the Ur Quattro is the legend. It’s the car that started it all for the Audi brand, the car that put the four rings on the performance car map. Initially developed for rally racing, the Ur Quattro proved that four-wheel drive could be used on the road, for performance, and be a ton of fun.

In this new video from JayEmm, we get to take a bit of a tour of the Audi Ur Quattro and one of its absolute best features — its engine.

While the Quattro all-wheel drive system, from which the car gets its name, is the star of the show, there’s another equally important ingredient to the success of the Ur Quattro’s recipe.

Its 2.2 liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine is a wonderfully little thing, with more than enough power, a great big wave of torque when the turbo kicks in and, more importantly, the most amazing noise. Being a turbo-five-cylinder, the Audi Ur Quattro makes a lovey, rumbly noise that’s so much more distinct than any engine from its rivals at the time.

This video learns us about the old-school five-pot and lets us listen to its glorious noises. There’s always something about a five-cylinder engine that’s so charming and this Audi Ur Quattro engine is no different.

It’s an icon of an engine and one whose layout is copied in even some of today’s Audi sports cars. The current Audi RS3 and TT RS both have 2.5 liter turbocharged five-cylinders. While the power and performance have obviously increase drastically since the late ’80s, the hilarious character and fun-loving nature of the Audi five-cylinder hasn’t changed a bit.
