VIDEO: Watch Audi Design Boss Discuss the Audi e-tron GT

The Audi e-tron GT is the brand’s latest performance car, in addition to being its latest electric car, and it’s been receiving high praise from most of the automotive enthusiast world. However, while it’s getting some praise for its performance and some for its electric tech, most of it is due to the car’s stunning design.

In this new video from Audi, we get to watch Marc Lichte, the head of design for Audi, discuss the Audi e-tron GT and its gorgeous concept-inspired design.

Being an electric car, Lichte was able to use all of the design elements he dreamed of using as a kid. Electric cars have very little mechanical underpinnings to get in the way of design, so designers have far more freedom to design the car of their dreams and that’s what Lichte was able to do with the e-tron GT.

Lichte was able to fit massive wheels, a long wheelbase, short overhangs and muscular haunches with ease. The lack of an engine, transmission, driveshaft, differentials, intercoolers, radiators, coolant lines, a fuel tank, and exhaust pipes allows EVs to be far easier to design. Which is why Lichte is having more fun designing EVs like the Audi e-tron GT than he ever has designing cars. From a design perspective, EVs offer a freedom that internal combustion cars never had.

In this video, Lichte talks about not only the car’s design but its importance to both the Audi brand and to his team. The Audi e-tron GT is the ultimate Audi design at the moment and it just so happens to also be the most important car for the brand’s future.

The entire design team did an incredible job, as it’s one of the best looking — if not the very best looking — electric car on the market and it could have an R8-level impact on the brand moving forward.
