Audi makes many very fast cars at the moment. In fact, it might be one of the few automakers that has so many 600-plus hp cars. Three of those cars are the Audi R8 V10 Plus, RS6 Avant Performance and S8 Plus. What’s interesting is how different each car is. One is a mid-engine supercar, one is a family wagon and the other is a premium luxury car. But all three of them make over 600 hp. So Top Gear puts all three against each other to see which is fastest.
The Audi R8 V10 Plus has the most power. Packing 610 hp from its 5.2 liter V10, the R8 V10 Plus is the fastest car to 60 mph, doing the sprint in under 3 seconds. It’s also the lightest car in the test. So it has a clear advantage. The Audi RS6 Avant Performance makes 605 hp from its 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 and can get from 0-60 mph in about 3.6 seconds. It has more torque but is also quite heavy, so it shouldn’t be able to beat the R8. Lastly, the Audi S8 Plus makes the same 605 hp from the same 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 as the RS6. Though, it’s also very heavy and a couple of ticks slower than the RS6. So it seems that it’s easy to see where this drag race is going.
When the race actually starts, the results are quite interesting, actually. The Audi R8 is not only the lightest but it has the best gearbox, a seven-speed dual-clutch. So it’s capable of shifting faster than the other two cars that have the same eight-speed automatic as each other. What else is intersting is that the RS6 Avant and S8 Plus have the exact same powertrain and basically the same aerodynamics, so the only difference between the two is really weight.
At the launch, the Audi R8 and RS6 Avant get almost an identical start. While the R8 has more horsepower and lower weight, the RS6 has a lot more torque. So it launches so violently. However, the S8 Plus seriously lags behind on the launch. We’re wondering if there’s some traction software issue that won’t allow it to launch as hard. But the most incredible thing is how far the RS6 Avant hangs side-by-side with the R8. Eventually, the R8 walks away from it and wins, but they hang together longer than expected. That leaves the Audi S8 in a distant third place.
So the Audi RS6 is a properly quick car, one that can hang with genuine supercars to about 60 mph. The S8 Plus is also a fast car but lacks a bit on the launch. Though, the Audi R8 V10 Plus is still king of the four rings.
