Now that the new Audi A3 Sportback has been revealed, it’s going to excite a lot of the enthusiast fanbase. The A3 is popular among many enthusiasts, as it offers a good, relatively inexpensive way to get into the Audi brand. However, there will always be critics who claim that it’s just a fancy Golf or Ford Focus and isn’t worth the extra money. But is that actually true? Rory Reid finds out in this new video.
The new A3 Sportback comes on the newest version of the VW Group’s MQB chassis, so it shares most of its underpinnings with the new VW Golf. That’s no bad thing, as the new Golf is great. But it does diminish a bit of the A3’s premium-ness, at least theoretically.
Step inside, though, and you’re met with a car that feels more premium than a Golf. Inside the Audi A3 Sportback, you get some of the best materials you’ll find in the segment, the same sort of MMI touchscreen tech as a six-figure Audi A8 and even the latest Virtual Cockpit, which is the best digital dial setup in the bizz.
It’s also worth noting that it’s design looks and feels special from the inside. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it before but Reid nailed it — it looks like a Lamborghini Urus on the inside, another car that shares a lot with Audi. Thanks to its hexagonal air vents, angular layout and center console design, it has a very Lamborghini-ish look. That’s either good or bad, depending on how you feel about the Urus, but it certainly gives the A3 character.
In terms of how it drives, Reid also thinks it feels more special than something like a Ford Focus. It’s surprisingly quiet inside for a car in this segment, it rides well and it’s a refined drive. It’s not as fun or as sporty as the Focus or the Golf but it does feel more premium, more special.
Of course, you’ll pay for that. The Audi A3 Sportback is more expensive than the Focus while also coming with less equipment. However, according to Reid, if you do spend the extra cash on the A3, you’re going to get a car that feels more special for it.
