In North America, the Audi SQ8 is powered by a 4.0 liter twin-turbocharged V8 that runs on 91 octane unleaded. However, in the UK has only had a diesel-powered SQ8 for the past year or so, which has frustrated a lot of UK-based AUdi enthusiasts. Now, though, all of Europe is getting the same petrol-powered SQ8 as North America. In this new video from Auto Trader UK, Rory Reid takes the new SQ8 for an enthusiastic spin.
The Audi SQ8 with its 4.0 liter V8 makes 500 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque. That helps it get from 0-60 mph in 4.0 seconds flat, according to its onboard lap timer in this video. More than that, Reid tested its top speed on some unrestricted Autobahn and was able to hit 165 mph, or ten mph faster than Audi’s claim.
We all know that the Audi SQ8 is fast, though. How well does it handle, though?
According to Reid, it’s surprisingly good. Sure, it weighs about as much as cement truck but Audi has given the SQ8 some serious chassis an suspension technology. So it gets rear-wheel steering, active anti-roll bars and adaptive air suspension, all of which combine to make it handle like a much smaller, much lighter car.
Obviously, you can only fight physics so much, so as impressive as the Audi SQ8 is it will never handle like a genuine sports car. Having said that, the SQ8 is one of the better driving SUVs on the market and that gives it great duality. It’s still luxurious, comfortable and spacious inside, so it can still operate as a genuine family vehicle. Just one that can also munch sports cars on the Autobahn.
As Reid notes, the future of performance SUVs, electrification is the answer. However, while they last, monster V8-powered SUVs are still fun and this new Audi SQ8 is among the best of them.
