Ever since the first Audi e-tron Concept car made its debut, there’s been talks of a sporty version. While those talks never amounted to anything official, there’s always been the idea of a sportier e-tron in the back of our minds. Now it might actually be on its way, as a potential Audi e-tron S might have just been seen lapping the Nurburgring.
In this new spy video, we can see some sort of e-tron model doing some hot laps, wearing some camouflage. It must be some new model variant of the e-tron, considering the car has been on sale for almost a full year now, giving the brand no reason to test one on the ‘Ring, especially in camouflage.
From what we can see, whatever this Audi e-tron model is, it looks a bit sportier than the standard car, with a lower suspension, larger front air intakes and sportier wheels. Motor Authority has some additional spy photos that show off a car with very sporty wheels, sportier even than the ones in this video. Also, the car in the spy photos is white but has black side mirrors. Black mirrors are often a sign of Audi Sport influence. For instance, many Audi ‘RS’ cars have black mirrors in contrast to their body color.
In the spy video, this Audi e-tron looks very fast and seems to corner nice and flat. Which is surprising because the standard e-tron is only adequately quick and doesn’t fire out of corners like this car seems to. Considering the fact that it’s likely not much lighter than the standard car, a ton of extra power is to be expected.
There’s a chance this could have the triple-motor setup that was featured in the e-tron Concept. That Concept was said to have about 500 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque from three electric motors; one at the front and two at the rear axle. That last bit is important because having two motors at the rear axle allows for real-time torque-vectoring, which helps make a car far more agile through corners. Audi also claimed that the e-tron Concept was capable of 0-60 mph in under 4.5 seconds. Considering the current production model can only do 5.5 seconds, this new Audi e-tron S could be a big performance jump.
We don’t know if this is officially an Audi e-tron S (or whatever Audi might call it) but it seems likely. Whatever this car is, it’s sportier and faster than the standard car and it’s testing at the Nurburgring in camouflage, which tells us that it’s a new model. So expect a sportier e-tron in the coming year or so.
