VIDEO: Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo destroys Nurburgring lap record

Porsche and Audi have had a good sibling rivalry in motorsport. When Audi left WEC (World Endurance Championship) and made the transition for Formula E, Porsche made a sentimental goodbye video to Audi. The two brands have competed for a long time, exchanging blows back and forth, but have always had mutual respect for one another, especially being that they’re both siblings under the VW Group. So it’s good to see Porsche excelling in motorsport and the brand’s recent record-shattering lap of the Nurburgring in the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo is a perfect example of that.

The previous Nurburgring Nordschleife record was set thirty five years ago by Stefan Bellof, who ran a 6:11.13 lap time in a Porsche 956c. It was an incredibly impressive lap that no car could top and no driver had the balls to attempt to beat. Now, though, Porsche’s Timo Bernhard just obliterated the record in the 919 Hybrid Evo and it may be the most heroic lap we’ve ever seen.

Bernhard actually ended up destroying the lap record on his first lap of the morning, running a 5:31.89 and that wasn’t even at full chat. He then went out for another run at full speed but realized that the car felt a bit too bouncy on the main straight, so he had the team adjust the dampers and went back out. His third and final lap of the day was a 5:19.546, almost a full minute faster than Bellof’s lap.

What’s even more impressive than the actual time itself is watching the lap. This video from Porsche, from the cockpit view of Bernhard’s car, is flat-out astonishing. It’s staggering to even imagine trying to process all of the information a racing driver needs to process in the moment while moving that quickly. The cornering speeds both Bernhard and the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo were able to achieve boggle the mind. And when you watch the simply explosive reaction time of the car, it’s incredible to think that he was able to react as quickly and nail his driving lines every time. The lap was picture perfect driving and it was done at speeds that mere mortal humans would not be able to comprehend, nevermind handle.

So from Audi enthusiasts to Porsche and its enthusiasts, congratulations on a truly impressive record breaking lap.

I've been in love with cars since I was a kid, specifically German cars. Now I get to drive them talk about them on the internet.
