VIDEO: Joe Achilles Drives the Audi S3 Sportback

We just recently tested the new Audi A3 Sportback, a car that we like quite a bit. However, we haven’t had the chance to get our hands on the new Audi S3 Sportback just yet. Which is why we’re turning to Joe Achilles to find out what it’s like.

In his new video, Achilles drives the new S3 Sportback to see how it stacks up to other cars in the competition. As far as hot-hatches go, Achilles has some good reference points. He was a previous owner of the BMW M140i hatchback, a car that enthusiasts love, and he was a big fan of the original Audi S3. So wat does he think of this new one?

He seems to like it quite a bit. It’s a good looking car with a great looking interior. Sure, some of its interior materials are a bit subpar when compared to some of its rivals in the segment, such as the BMW M135i. But we’d argue that its style and tech make up for tat.

In terms of driving dynamics, it’s certainly a quick little car. The 2.0 liter turbo-four under the hood makes 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. That, when paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, allows it to get from 0-60 mph in a claimed 4.8 seconds, which is likely a conservative figure.

Thankfully, it seems to handle quite well, too. Its steering is decently sharp, it lacks any unnecessary understeer and it seems to have good body control. Achilles even makes it a point to mention how its suspension is surprisingly good, despite being on passive dampers, rather than adaptive ones.

One interesting thing to note is that Achilles even thinks this new Audi S3 Sportback is even better than the previous-gen Audi RS3 Sportback. That’s a bold statement, as the last-gen RS3 was a seriously quick car with a brilliant engine. However, if he’s right, this new S3 Sportback should be a helluva great hot hatch.
