At the moment, if you want an electrified premium car outside of Tesla, your choices are rather limited. You essentially just have a couple of electric SUVs to choose from. However, at least Audi offers two different flavors of its EV SUV to choose from; the Audi e-tron and Audi e-tron Sportback. In this new video from Joe Achilles, we check out the latter.
The Sportback essentially exactly the same as the standard Audi e-tron, just with a more aggressively raked roof. That new roofline does impede rear seat passenger space a bit, though. Admittedly, I didn’t have much of a problem when I sat in the back at the LA Auto Show. In fact, I felt rear seat headroom was quite good. But I’m 5’9″. Achilles is a much taller fellow and he clearly doesn’t have as much room in the back. So unless your family is on the smaller side, you might need to stick with the standard e-tron.
In terms of how it drives, it’s exactly the same as the standard e-tron. So if you like that car, you’ll like the Sportback. Its 402 horsepower from its dual electric motors actually makes it quite quick. Achilles tests an overtaking maneuver and the time it takes the e-tron Sportback to accelerate from 30-60 mph, in a very big and heavy car, is shockingly short.
Achilles also records a best 0-60 mph time of 5.64 seconds, which is hot-hatch quick. Admittedly, most Teslas are much faster but also more expensive.
Overall, he seems to like the car quite a big, thanks to its ride, surprising handling and decent performance. However, he doesn’t seem to think the Audi e-tron Sportback is worth buying over the standard car. The standard e-tron is cheaper, has the same range, the same power, the same performance and the same tech while having a bigger back seat and a better trunk. Plus, Achilles also likes the look of the standard car better as well.
We haven’t driven the Sportback model just yet but, considering it’s basically the same car as the regular e-tron, we pretty much understand how it’s going to drive. So we essentially agree with everything Achilles said.
