VIDEO: How Much Power Does the Audi RS3 Really Have?

According to Audi, this new generation of RS3 makes 401 horsepower and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque from its 2.5 liter turbocharged I5. However, Audi — as well as other German automakers — likes to underrate its power figures. So how much power does the Audi RS3 actually make?


In this new video from Evolve Automotive, they put the new Audi RS3 on a Dyno to see how much power it really makes, not just what the spec sheet says. On the Dyno, the RS3 showed that its peak horsepower has some peaks and valleys at the top end of the rev range but if you take the average, it’s somewhere around 430 horsepower. Which is more than Audi claims from the factory.

What about torque, though? On the Dyno, the Audi RS3 put out 428 lb-ft of torque (580 Nm), which is quite a bit more than Audi claims from the factory. It also peaks low in the rev range, around 3,250 rpm, which might explain why it launches off the line so well.


This also shows just how punchy the little turbo-five can be; 430 horsepower and 428 lb-ft from just 2.5 liters? That’s impressive. However, it also isn’t very relevant. Audi’s turbo-five has never been beloved for its performance, although that always did help. Instead, it was revered for its power delivery and its noise. Due to an unusual firing order, it creates a very specific intake/exhaust noise that fans have come to love. It’s a big part of the reason why people bought the Audi RS3 over its competitors, such as the Mercedes-AMG A45.

We need to appreciate that such a cool engine still exists because it won’t for long. Audi is switching to full-on electrification by the end of the decade and engines like the turbo-five will be as extinct as the dinosaurs its fuel is made from.
