VIDEO: Hooniverse drives the 2016 Audi TTS

We drove the new Audi TT awhile back and found that it was a significant improvement over the previous generation. It’s actually one of our favorite sports cars on the market right now and can genuinely compete with the Porsche Boxster. The Audi TTS is an ever hotter variant of the TT, packing a 292 hp 2.0 liter turbocharged engine from the Audi S3. Throw in stiffer, sportier suspension, bigger wheels and brakes and the TTS becomes a genuine, proper sports car.

This is a pretty new development, though, as the previous-generation Audi TTS was known for only being okay and not very engaging. While it was fast enough and capable enough, it didn’t really make you want to push it harder, drive it faster or just generally have any fun in it. But the new one is said to be much better. So Hooniverse just recently took a Vegas Yellow Audi TTS out on some scenic roads to find out if it is.

Apparently, it is. Just as in the standard Audi TT, the TTS is engaging and fun to drive, the way a sports car is supposed to be. Its 292 horses are capable of getting the TTS in 4.2 seconds, which is plenty quick. That was Porsche 911 Carrera S territory not too long ago. But pure speed is useless if that car can’t put a smile on y0ur face. Well, apparently, the TTS does that.

Audi TTS

While the Audi TTS is met with a bit of understeer at the limit, it is an Audi after all. However, that understeer doesn’t disrupt the fun, partially because it only comes in when pushing it really hard and because a bit of understeer helps keep things a bit safe and more manageable. Though, it would be nice to have the Quattro system send a bit more power to the rear wheels, allowing the back end to step out just a bit.

Audi’s seven-speed S-Tronic dual-clutch gearbox has been a gem in every car we’ve driven it in and it’s apparently no different here. Shifts are said to be fast, responsive and smooth. While a manual might be more fun, this S-Tronic ‘box is a great.

As far as steering goes, it’s a touch more numb than maybe it could be but, as a modern car with electric power assisted steering, it’s going to be that way. Gone are the days of beautifully communicative steering feel so we should all stop talking about it. However, the TTS’ steering is accurate and direct with good weight to it and it allows you to place the TTS exactly where you want it.

So all in all, the Audi TTS seems to be a great sports car that can rival the best in the business. It also looks great and has an interior worthy of the Audi brand’s standards. So while the previous Audi TTS wasn’t anything to write home about, this new one is and it’s damn exciting.
