One of my absolute dream cars is a first-gen Audi R8 V10 Spyder with a manual transmissions. Its combination of stunning good looks, killer V10 soundtrack that’s unobstructed by a metal roof, and its incredible manual transmission is one that I cannot resist. However, it’s not one I’m going to be able to own anytime soon, unless something drastic happens. Which is why this new video from AutoTopNL is so fun to watch.
This video, as with all AutoTopNL videos, puts us front and center, POV-style, in the driver’s seat of an Audi R8 V10 Spyder with that glorious manual transmission.
The specific car in this video has an aftermarket exhaust that sounds absolutely fantastic and, when revving past 8,000 rpm, seems to provide a religious experience. Especially with the roof down, allowing all of that sensational noise to enter the cabin. Then throw in the metallic clack of each gear shift and the original Audi R8 V10 Spyder, with a manual, is probably the most exciting driving experience from any Audi in history.
In the video, when he stops the car under a bridge and revs the engine with its exhaust valves open, it sounds better the 90-percent of all supercars on sale right now. There’s nothing like the sound of a naturally-aspirated V10 engine, especially one with a great exhaust on it.
Sure, the new Audi R8 V10 Performance is a superb supercar and, honestly objectively better in every way; it’s faster, more comfortable, more high-tech, and even more fuel efficient. However, the old car appeals to the soul more than the new car. It’s better looking (arguably), comes with a proper manual transmission, and even has more analog steering. So while the new car is cool, the first-gen Audi R8, especially in Spyder form with a manual, is the supercar I want.
