The Audi R8 is the Mack Daddy of all Audis. It’s the car that Audi enthusiasts use to brag with to other brand enthusiasts. So when the topic of drag races comes up, Audi fans will always use the R8 as their car of choice. The first-gen Audi R8 came with either a 4.2 liter V8 engine, developing 420 hp, or a 5.2 liter V10 engine, developing 520 hp. Either car was incredibly fast off of the line, thanks to all of that power and Quattro all-wheel drive.
However, some newer cars have become quicker in a straight line, even cars with considerably less power. The BMW i8 has now become one of those cars. This video shows that quite well and is actually quite interesting to see. The R8 packs its V8 engine and 420 ponies, while the i8 has a 1.5 liter three-cylinder engine and a couple of electric motors that combine for 357 hp. However, the BMW i8 has a chassis made from carbon fiber and weighs significantly less than the R8.
The point of this is that the race was closer than most people would think. The BMW i8 is a hybrid with a three-cylinder engine, so it isn’t thought to be able to compete with V8 thoroughbreds. But it can and it does, as evident by this video. The Audi R8 is still the more exciting and more dynamic car of the two, but the BMW i8 is no slouch, either. This is one of the more interesting drag races lately, and worth a watch, to see who ends up winning.
