VIDEO: Chris Harris laps the Audi TT RS for Extra Gear

If you’ve seen any of the recent Top Gear episodes from the past couple of seasons, with longtime journalist Chris Harris as host, you’d know about Extra Gear. What is Extra Gear? Well, it’s a bit more, umm, Gear… Basically after each episode is over, you can jump on the interwebs and see some more fast driving from guys like Harris and Rory Reid. In this new video (which is actually from last season but you can watch it free on YouTube now), Chris Harris does a lap of the famed Top Gear test track in an Audi TT RS.

As Harris mentions in the beginning of the video, the Audi TT is often looked at as a hairdresser’s car. It’s seen as the sort of car that people who want just style and not substance buy. However, the Audi TT RS is much more than that. It’s got a 2.5 liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine and it makes a very healthy 400 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. That helps it get from 0-60 mph in about 3.7 seconds, which is seriously fast.

It’s an engine that Harris seems to love. He claims it to have sharp throttle response, despite it being turbocharged, and tons of power. But most importantly, it makes a great noise, one that Harris calls “musical”. In fact, he even says it’s one of the best road-car engines he’s tested in a long time.

Though, it’s not perfect. It still has quite a bit of understeer, thanks to its Haldex (not true Quattro) all-wheel drive system. So he won’t go as far as to say that it’s a proper driver’s car. Having said that, it’s a very fast, very impressive and very stylish coupe. So if you want something fast and good looking that can handle most roads, and even in all sorts of weather, the Audi TT RS is a good buy. However, if you want something that’s more of a driver’s tool, it might be best to look elsewhere.
