The original Audi S2 Avant from the early ’90s isn’t exactly the most well known Audi sports car, never mind one that’s typically tuned. It’s a great car, don’t get me wrong, and it was the backbone for the astonishing RS2 Avant. It’s just that the S2 Avant was only made for a handful of years in the early-to-mid ’90s and wasn’t extremely popular. However, for those few enthusiasts that actually own them, it turns out they’re highly tune-able.
In this new video from AutoTopNL, we actually get to take a POV drive in a highly tuned, very powerful 1994 Audi S2 Avant and it’s pretty great.
According to this video, this Audi S2 Avant is making a whopping 709 hp from its 2.2 liter turbocharged five-cylinder. Obviously, to make that sort of power, it has quite a big turbo strapped to it. Because it’s an old-school, small-displacement engine with a massive turbo, there’s quite a bit of turbo lag. But once it comes on boost, it’s an animal and it makes a killer noise. Above 3,000 rpm, it’s absolutely monstrous.
Old-school turbocharged engines might not have the exotic motorsport wail of high-strung naturally-aspirated engines or big V8s but they have a character of their own that’s equally as intoxicating. The induction noise and ‘whoosh’ of the turbo make for a great soundtrack as you flog your classic sports car.
What’s even crazier is that this is all coming from an engine that dates back to the ’80s and only displaces around 2,200cc. That’s a small engine and it makes more power than an Audi R8 V10 Plus. Imagine that in a small family wagon from the ’90s? Simply awesome.
We wish that this video showed what the car looked like as well but it’s not a deal-breaker as we still get on onboard video of it and see its mega performance from inside the cabin.
