VIDEO: Check out the “Ronin” D2-gen Audi S8 from JayEmm

One of my favorite all-time Audis is the original D2-generation Audi S8, for a number of reasons. One is the fact that it captured my car enthusiast-attention back when I was a young teenager after seeing it in the movie Ronin. That movie featured an original S8 in an awesome car chase with a Citroen on some stunning French roads. The movie is great and the scene is great, so the car has always stuck with me. The other reason is that, as a luxury car, it’s about perfect in its combination of style, speed and comfort. In this new video from JayEmm on Cars, we get to check out the O.G. S8 up close and personal.

The D2 Audi S8 in question is actually owned by Audi and is in fantastic condition. It’s not absolutely perfect but it’s great considering it has almost 160,000 miles on it. It’s also a great color, is on the right wheels and just looks right. At the time, being the late ’90s to early ’00s, there really was only one better looking luxury car — the E38-generation BMW 7 Series. And, to be honest, we wouldn’t blame anyone for preferring the A8/S8. It was, and still is, such a handsome and classic design.

Inside, it’s old-school luxury at its finest. It’s well made, well laid out, perfectly functional and full of great little details. What I love about luxury cars of that era is that they didn’t rely on having the best in-cabin tech to compete with their rivals. Instead, it was all about opulence; build quality, material quality, comfort and prestige. There’s also something to be said about they silky smoothness with which luxury cars like the D2 Audi S8 ride, something JayEmm points out.

If the D2 Audi S8 didn’t have so many transmission problems after 100,000 miles, I’d be searching for one in classifieds right now. It’s a car that I truly love and this video hasn’t done anything except reinforce that.
