The 1992 Audi S4 GTO was one of the coolest race cars in Audi’s history. Those wide flanks, huge rear wing and massive air intakes at the front make it looks so incredibly ’90s cool. But the absolute best part about the Audi S4 GTO is that glorious twenty-valve turbocharged five-cylinder engine.
Based on the original C4-generation Audi S4, the Audi S4 GTO had to be made thanks to homologation rules in South Africa. The original Audi 90 IMSA GTO car couldn’t race in South Africa thanks to the fact that the Audi 90 was never sold there. So Audi needed to develop a new race car based on the S4, which was sold there. Thus, the S4 GTO.
The very same Audi S4 GTO that Hans-Joachim Stuck drove back in the ’90s has recently been seen again at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. In this video, the S4 GTO makes some of the greatest turbocharged motorsport sounds. First, you hear the unfiltered high-pitched growl from the famously odd-firing five-cylinder engine. Then you hear the hilariously fantastic turbo flutter. It’s a brilliant noise and one that’s intoxicating.
