VIDEO: Carwow’s Mat Watson lets mom launch his Audi RS4 Avant

Carwow’s Mat Watson is a fortunate fellow. As a journalist for Carwow, his long-term test car is a Nardo Grey Audi RS4 Avant, quite possibly the best all-around wagon on the planet. Not only does it look great and have the practicality of a small SUV but it also has the performance of a supercar from just a few years ago. That performance is incredibly accessible and easy to use, though. So easy, in fact, that Watson lets his own mother launch it and do her best quarter-mile run.

Watson’s mom is 70 years old and has probably never driven anything near as quick as the RS4. Thanks to its 2.9 liter twin-turbo V6, with 450 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, it can rocket to 60 mph in less than four seconds. So how does she do?

Really well, actually. Watson guides her through activating launch control, through the series of buttons its takes to do so. Then, she left foots the brake as hard as she get, pins the throttle to the floor and dumps the brake. The Audi RS4 Avant rockets forward and she never seems afraid or startled. In fact, she runs a 3.7 second 0-60 mph time and a 12.1 quarter-mile, which is quick.

Then, it’s Watson’s turn to drive with mom riding shotgun. There, she gets a bit more nervous and seems more scared, especially as Watson keeps pushing past 150 mph, a speed that genuinely seemed to frighten her. The big question, though, is — was Watson able to best his mom’s time? Well, your just going to have to watch the video to find out.
