VIDEO: Carwow gives us a tour of the Audi AI:TRAIL Quattro Concept

When Audi debuted the AI:TRAIL Quattro Concept at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, it was a breath of fresh air. Amidst the typical slew of autonomous, electric pods for the future, the Audi AI:TRAIL was a vehicle that was both electric and autonomous but one that also seemed interesting to drive. While most EV concepts are city cars, designed to live in dense, urban cities, the AI:TRAIL is designed for exactly the opposite. It’s designed to get you out of the city, into nature and actually explore the beautiful environment that its EV powertrain is designed to save.

In this new video from Carwow, Mat Watson gives us a very in depth look at the Audi AI:TRAIL. This includes actually getting up close with it, going inside of it, poking around and showing off its impressive features.

One of the really cool features of the Audi AI:TRAIL is its headlight setup. It looks like its headlights are next to the A-pillar, which is a weird placement for lights to begin with. But instead, they’re daytime running lights. The real headlights are actually mounted to the roof rack. Actually, they’re not really headlights at all. They’re actually lighted drones that can attach to the roof rack and act as headlights are detach and fly ahead of the car, illuminating the path ahead. That’s awesome, even if it’s a bit unrealistic.

Another really cool feature is the car’s digital driver’s display, or lack thereof. Audi figures that a typical driver’s display, featuring speed and vehicle information, is unnecessary in the future. So instead of spending development money on one, the Audi AI: TRAIL actually has a little slot on the top of the steering column for a mobile phone to fit into. Once connected, the phone’s screen becomes the digital driver’s display. Not only is that simple and easy, allowing the car to be cheaper to make, it gives driver’s a spot to place and charge their phone, while also eliminating their ability to text and drive. Brilliant.

There are quite a few more interesting features about the Audi AI:TRAIL and they all help make it one of the coolest concept cars we’ve seen in ages.

I've been in love with cars since I was a kid, specifically German cars. Now I get to drive them talk about them on the internet.
