This new video review from Carwow combines a surprisingly interesting mix of cars for a drag race. Mat Watson starts off in an Audi RS3 Sportback and takes on an Audi RS5 Sportback, a B7-generation Audi RS4 Avant and the new diesel-powered Audi S4 Avant TDI. None of these cars are realistically comparable to the other but it is interesting to find out which is fastest.
Watson sort of broke this test up into two tests; the Audi RS3 Sportback versus the RS5 Sportback and the B7 RS4 vs the new S4 TDI. They then perform three tests; a standing quarter-mile drag race, a rolling drag race and a 60-0 mph braking test.
The car with the most to lose is the Audi RS5 Sportback. It’s the most expensive by far and the most powerful, with 450 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. Thankfully for it, it pretty much dominates the video. However, not by as much as you might think, given its higher price tag than the second-place Audi RS3 Sportback, which really hung on to it thanks to its 400 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque.
While the B7 Audi RS4 Avant needed everything it had to beat the diesel-powered S4 Avant TDI. In its defense, the B7 RS4 is significantly older than the S4 and is naturally-aspirated, which puts it at a disadvantage at launch, as it lacks the low-end torque of the S4. Though, forget about all of that because the B7 RS4’s free-breathing 4.2 liter V8 with 420 hp is a thing of absolute joy and is by far the best sounding of the bunch. It also is the only car in the test with a manual gearbox.
All of these cars are great cars, with maybe the exception of the S4 diesel, but if I were to choose one to actually put my money down on, it’d be the Audi RS3 Sportback. It’s fast as all hell, has a superb little engine and is practical enough for everyday life. The B7 RS4 is even more exciting and more practical but I don’t wanna foot the repair bill for the V8’s timing chain at 100k miles…
