In the second part of Carfection’s series of videos looking into the history of Audi RS Avants, the B5 Audi RS4 Avant is spotlighted. It’s the O.G. RS4 and one of the first cars to start the lineage to the RS cars we know today. So it’s a special car, the B5 RS4, as it marked a turning point for the brand and started the success of what we know as Audi Sport today. The B5 RS4 is extra special to to Carfection presenter Alex Goy, as his late father had the B5 S4, adored it and always aspired to drive and own an RS4 Avant. Goy’s father was never able to drive the B5 RS4 but now he gets to drive it. So there’s some real sentimentality to this video that’s the sort of reason why we get into cars.
Under the hood of the RS4, Audi received outside help yet again, after having Porsche help tune the RS2 Avant. This time, Audi’s 2.7 liter twin-turbo V6 was tuned by Cosworth and made a seriously ipressive 375 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. That engine was mated to a six-speed auto and, of course, drove all four wheels via Quattro. 0-60 mph came in just 4.9 seconds, which was properly fast by the standards of its time and is even damn quick today.
Now, the B5-generation Audi A4/S4 never really had a great reputation for being a driver’s car. Sure, they were fast and had tons of grip but they were never as good as their other Bavarian counterparts. However, according to Goy, the B5 Audi RS4 Avant is a bit different. It’s better suspension, steering and brakes all give it more life, more character and make it really quite nice to drive. It’s fast, still fast even for today, and it’s fun to drive.
This video is a good watch if you’re an Audi fan as it shows us the reason why so many of us love cars. The love for cars can be passed down from generation to generation and the cars that are loved, owned and driven become more than just cars. This Audi RS4 Avant is special to Alex Goy and I’m sure there’s a fast Audi, or any car for that matter, that makes some of you feel just as special.
