The previous generation Audi TTS was a car that was met with some lukewarm reviews. The last TTS was a good car but not a great car, one that showed its potential and then fell a bit flat. This new one, however, based on the third generation TT, is a very good car and one that lives up to its potential. Carfection has decided to give it a proper go and see just how good the new Audi TTS really is.
Based on VW/Audi’s new MQB platform, the new Audi TTS is lighter than before, stiffer than before and more powerful than before. So that should all come together to make a TTS that’s entirely better than before, right? Right. And it does, because this new Audi TTS is far more engaging to drive than the model that it replaces. Its 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces 292 hp, straight from the Audi S3, and is mated to a seven-speed S-Tronic dual-clutch gearbox that sends power to all four wheels, via Audi’s Quattro, as standard. That means 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds and an electronically-limited top speed of 155 mph. So it’s damn quick.
But outright speed isn’t the sole purpose of the Audi TTS, as that’s the easy part. The previous-gen Audi TTS was fast too, but it lacked it being a great sports car which is what the TTS is supposed to be. It’s supposed to be a car that puts a massive grin on your face when you drive it and that’s exactly what this new TTS is. About time.
According to Carfection, the Audi TTS has great steering, a great engine and is very confidence inspiring at very high speeds, exactly as a sports car should be. It wants to play and wants you to play back. It even has a lovely driver-focused interior, something we’ve lauded in all the new TTs thus far, and that’s important in a sports car. You want to feel engaged with the car and have a driver-focused cockpit helps you do just that.
Overall, it seems as if the new Audi TTS went from a car that seemed like a decent sports car with decent looks to a great sports car with great looks. Audi seems to have gotten this new generation of the Audi TTS just right and it’s a good sign of things to come for the Audi TT RS.
