We’ve all read car reviews before, especially ones from enthusiast publications such as this one, Car and Driver and Top Gear. The problem with publications like those and ours is that they come from an enthusiast’s point of view and, let’s face it, we have a skewed perception of what an automobile should be.
Is the Cadillac ATS a better car than the Audi A4 in the real world because it has minutely sharper handling and better steering feel, according to most pubs? No, of course not, because its touch screen CUE infotainment system is hot garbage, the back seat is as welcoming as a medieval iron maiden and the interior build quality is on par with Fisher Price. The Audi A4, even the current B8 model, is a far superior all around car because it’s better at everyday things than the ATS. The ATS might be sharper and more fun on a track, but who the hell takes standard A4s and ATS’ to the track? So while Motor Trend might say the ATS is the better car because it’s more “fun”, for the Average Joe, the A4 is the superior car.
That’s why Car Buyer is so good. They review the car from an actual buyer’s perspective, not just as an enthusiast journalist, like myself, who gets to drive awesome cars for free and then criticize them because they don’t make them feel like they’re on the Nurburgring all of the time.So when Car Buyer decided to review the brand-new Audi A4, I got excited because it’s nice to see how the car is from another perspective.
We already know that the new Audi A4 is a great car. The new B9 A4, build on Volkswagen Group’s MLB platform, the same one that underpins the Audi Q7 and even the Bentley Bentayga, is far better than its predecessor. The previous car, the B8, was a bit too slow, a bit too sloppy of a handler, had an uncomfortable ride and its interior was starting to age quickly. This new model remedies all of those issues. The new A4 is faster than before, while also achieving superior fuel economy, and has the best interior in its class, in terms of room, comfort and design. The Mercedes-Benz C Class has a phenomenal interior, and it might even be prettier than the A4’s, but it’s not as roomy or as functional. The Audi A4’s interior is the best combination of all things.
It also rides fantastically, especially with the adaptive suspension and handles quite well, though it might not be as thrilling as the BMW 3 Series or Jaguar XE. The new B9 Audi A4 is a sensational all around product and one that most customers will actually prefer to the 3 Series and XE, as it’s roomier, more comfortable and has a better interior than those two, while having only a minor penalty in performance to them.
