The B5-generation Audi RS4 Avant was the first of its kind, the beginning of an icon. While it seems a bit old and sloppy, in terms of performance, compared with today’s cars, it’s still a brilliant car to drive and one that any enthusiast would be happy to have. Despite being old, though, it can also still hang with the newcomers, such as the brand-new Audi RS3 Sportback. In this new video from Auditography, we see how these two cars stack up side-by-side.
First, we take a good look at each car from various different angles to get a good look at each. While the brand-new Audi RS3 Sportback is a handsome hatchback and one that’s brutally fast, it just hasn’t garner the same amount of praise, nor excitement, that its rivals get. Yet, the B5-gen Audi RS4 looks brilliant, even today. Those flared wheel arches, small shape and practical trunk make it far better than the RS3.
Inside, though, there’s no question. The new Audi RS3 is far superior. While there will always be a place in my heart for ’90s German metal, their interiors were less than stellar. So while we really love the B5-gen Audi RS4 Avant, the new RS3 has it beat by a mile.
Under the hood of the Audi RS4 Avant lies a 2.7 liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that makes 375 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. That means 0-60 mph happens in 4.9 seconds. That’s not astronomical anymore but it’s still quite good and more than enough to be fun. The Audi RS3 uses a 2.5 liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine that makes 400 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. So 0-60 mph happens in a much faster 3.9 seconds.
In terms of performance, technology, luxury and safety, the Audi RS3 is the better car, without question. Yet, as far as desirability, style and driver enjoyment, we’d take the B5 Audi RS4 Avant everyday of the week and twice on race day.
