There’s been some talk about how sporty roadsters are dead, that the market just isn’t there for them anymore. However, we have some genuinely fantastic roadsters on sale at the moment and there are a few to choose from. The Audi TTS Roadster is still alive and kicking, the all-new BMW Z4 M40i is a great little car and the Porsche Boxster GTS is, well, a Boxster so of course it’s fantastic. Which of them is the fastest, though?
In this new video from Carwow, we take a look at a series of tests between these three cars. The Audi TTS Roadster packs a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 310 hp, while the Porsche Boxster has a 2.5 liter turbo flat-four that makes 365 hp and the BMW Z4 M40i gets a 3.0 liter turbocharged I6 with 335 hp. It should be noted that the BMW only makes 335 hp in Europe but makes 382 hp in North America, due to emissions regulations.
So this test should be fairly easy to determine beforehand, right? The Porsche is the lightest car of the three by quite a bit and it’s the most powerful. So it should win. And it does.
In the standard quarter-mile drag race, the Carwow’s Mat Watson gets a bit of a better start in the BMW Z4 than the other cars, yet the Audi still manages to keep up, thanks to all-wheel drive traction off the line. However the Bimmer soon starts to pull away from the Audi, only to have the Porsche catch up and take the win.
After that, they conduct a couple more tests, all of which go a similar way. It’s no surprise that the most powerful, lightest and most expensive car in the test is also the best dynamically. Still, it’s a fun video to watch and it shows that we really have some great sporty roadsters to choose from.
