VIDEO: Audi SQ8 caught testing at the Nurburgring

Audi-SQ8-Nurburgring

At the moment, the newest and most exciting car to come from Audi is the Q8. While it might not be the prettiest thing we’ve ever seen, it’s certainly a car we’re excited about. The Q8 is Audi’s latest flagship, a car that will show off the latest and greatest of what Audi has to offer. It’s also the brand’s most luxurious, most premium car. Even more exciting than that, though, is the prospect of what’s to come — specifically the Audi SQ8.

In this new spy video from Automotive Mike, we take a look at both a completely un-camouflaged Audi SQ8 lapping the Nurburgring. It looks quick.

Thanks to what will likely be a version of the Audi SQ7’s powertrain, which is a triple-turbocharged 4.0 liter V8 diesel, this Audi Q8 seems very fast for a big SUV. The SQ7 makes 429 hp and can hit 60 mph in the low four-second range. Expect the SQ8 to have a bit more power and be a bit quicker.

However, there’s a possibility that the SQ8 will get a second powertrain for the US market, as there’s almost no chance we get the diesel. So we’ve heard that it could get the same 2.9 liter twin-turbocharged V6 as the Audi RS5, which would make about 450 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, maybe a bit more. In this video, you can hear more of a muted V8 growl, though, so this is likely the diesel option. Especially considering it’s being tested in Germany.

It also seems to handle pretty well for an SUV. We can see it corner quite quickly, with surprising turn-in and flat body control. It’s likely to get the same active anti-roll bars as the SQ7, as it will also gain that car’s 48-volt electrical subsystem. It’s also likely to get a BAS (Belt Alternator Starter), which is essentially an electric motor that can power the engine’s crankshaft on its own, allowing the engine to shut down during cruising at highway speed to save fuel.

We can’t wait to see what becomes of the Audi SQ8, as it’s set to be the most exciting SUV in Audi’s lineup, regardless of powertrain.
