When it comes to a daily performance machine, something that you can use everyday but also torch sports cars at stop lights, the Audi RS4 Avant is hard to top. However, it has some new competition from its Bavarian neighbor — the BMW X3 M Competition.
The new BMW X3 M is brutally fast, seriously capable and even more practical, being an SUV. It’s also more powerful than the Audi RS4 Avant, as the Bimmer has a 3.0 liter twin-turbo I6 with 503 hp (510 PS), compared to the Audi’s 2.9 liter twin-turbo V6 with 444 hp (450 PS). But the RS4 is a bit lighter and more aerodynamic. So which one is faster in a drag race? We get to find out in this new video from Car Magazine SA.
While it’s admittedly hard to tell how accurate this race is, thanks to the Fast and Furious style editing of the video, we’re just going to have to trust Car Mag’s conclusion. In a quarter-mile drag race, the Audi RS4 Avant bests the BMW X3 M Competition, with a time of 12.04 seconds. That’s only a touch faster than the X3 M’s 12.53 seconds. Still, it’s faster and that’s actually surprising.
The lighter curb weight of the Audi RS4 Avant is likely the biggest reason as to how it was able to take down the more powerful BMW X3 M Competition. However, better all-wheel drive grip (Quattro is a bit better at launching than BMW’s xDrive) and launch control management likely helped as well. This also isn’t the first time we’ve seen an Audi Sport model take down more powerful cars in recent memory, as the RS5 Sportback just recently beat a Tesla Model 3 Performance.
So as fast daily drivers go, the Audi RS4 Avant seems to remain the best option on the market. It looks great, clearly fast as all hell and will ultimately handle better than a tall SUV will.
