As an everyday supercar, it’s really difficult to beat the Audi R8. It’s comfortable, incredibly fast and makes an exhilarating naturally-aspirated V10 noise. But in terms of pure performance and excitement, the R8 might be lacking compared to some of the other supercars on the market.
In this new video from Carwow, we take a look at how the Audi R8 Spyder stacks up against some of its rivals, such as the McLaren 570S Spider, Mercedes-AMG GT C Roadster and the BMW i8 Roadster.
The R8’s closest rival is the McLaren. The McLaren 570S is right up there with the R8 as an everyday supercar. Even though it’s more expensive and has a less exciting sound, it makes up for that with better performance and sharper handling. Then there’s the AMG GT C Roadster, which is more of a sports car with supercar performance, being front-engine. And the BMW i8 Roadster is actually a hybrid sports car that looks like a supercar. So how do these cars compare on the drag strip?
Well, in the first drag race, which requires all cars to start by dropping their soft-top convertible roofs and take off once they’re down, the AMG GT crushes them all, as its roof drops the quickest, allowing it to get a jump on everything else. The R8’s roof is by far the slowest, leaving it way behind.
In the second test, which is just a standing drag race with their roofs already down, the Audi R8’s Quattro all-wheel drive allows it to get the jump on the rest of the group at first, but the McLaren’s extra power allows it to pull ahead and win the test.
Lastly, they do a rolling drag race, all at the same speed, and the McLaren and the AMG pull ahead of the others, with the AMG just edging it out.
So the Audi R8 Spyder, despite being an excellent all-around, everyday supercar, lacks a bit in terms of performance to its rivals. Still, it’s damn fast and is cheaper than the McLaren.
