Audi plans on going to the Moon. We’ve known this for quite some time now, as the four-ringed brand has been helping the German startup “Part-Time Scientists” to develop a lunar rover to help navigate the Moon’s rough terrain. But to get the Audi Lunar Quattro, the lunar rover built by Audi, some more attention, it’s going to star in the upcoming sci-fi blockbuster “Alien: Covenant”.
The latest entry in Ridley Scott’s epic sci-fi series, Alien: Covenant sees the crew of the colony ship “Covenant” arrive on a new and remote planet across the galaxy. What they think is a desolated planet to colonize and create upon is actually a dark and terrifying world, filled with dangerous creatures. When they uncover a threat beyond their imaginations, they must attempt a harrowing escape. In its film debut, the Audi Lunar Quattro is an integral part of the Covenant mission and is deployed to help Faris (Amy Seimetz) navigate and assess the challenging, unknown terrain of a new planet.
Both Audi and Twentieth Century Fox have collaborated to put the actual Audi Lunar Quattro in the film and get it some real screen time. “The ‘Alien’ franchise is the best way for us to garner suitable attention for the moon rover developed by Audi, and to showcase Audi’s intelligent technologies in a visionary environment,” explains Giovanni Perosino, Vice President International Marketing Communication at Audi.
“Fox’s partnership with Audi on ‘Alien: Covenant’ is an opportunity to bring to the forefront the innovative work Audi is doing in exploration,” said Zachary Eller, Senior Vice President Marketing Partnerships at Twentieth Century Fox. “We’re happy to continue our long relationship with Audi that has allowed our filmmakers to incorporate authentic, leading-edge technology into their futuristic worlds.”
Don’t forget that this Audi Lunar Quattro will actually be going to the moon, which is crazy to think. When America was the first country to put a man on the moon, the amount of pride that enveloped the nation was epic. Imagine what Audi will feel like being the first automaker to put a vehicle on the moon? They have to plant a four-ringed flag somewhere with that thing.
Audi has pumped all of its technological expertise into the Lunar Quattro. Using its lightweight and electric technology, the Audi Lunar Quattro is made almost entirely from 3D-printed aluminum and weighs only 30 kilograms (66 lbs), using other exotic lightweight materials as well. It also uses an electric Audi e-tron motor and Quattro all-wheel drive, so it can properly hustle along the lunar surface.
Alien: Covenant comes out this May and we’ll not only get a chance to see the next chapter in Ridley Scott’s terrifying saga but we’ll also get to see the Audi Lunar Quattro in action. As a bit fan of all of the previous Alien films, I was pumped for the movie before I heard this. Now I must see it.
To go along with the appearance in the film, Audi, 3AM and Twentieth Century Fox have created a suspenseful short film of the Audi Lunar Quattro patrolling the Covenant’s Terraforming Bay when it spots an unidentified lifeform and investigates it in the dark. Check it out below.
