There may have never been a more difficult time to develop a high-end luxury car for a company not named Mercedes-Benz. For the past few years, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been the best luxury car in the segment. Sure, the Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series are excellent cars but the S-Class is just the best and that’s been the case for a long time. So why bother trying? Well, Audi and BMW both figured they’d give it another go.
In this new video from WhatCar, both the Audi A8 and newly facelifted BMW 7 Series attempt to tackle the reigning champion S-Class. Can either one of them do it? Actually, yes. And it’s the Audi A8.
This is a bit of a stunner, actually, because the S-Class has been the unquestioned champion in this segment since this current model debuted. While the Audi A8 isn’t entirely new, as it’s been around for a little over a year now, it’s still new to a lot of customers. Its tech is a bit more, well, techy than the other two cars’ and its design is a bit more modern.
While the folks at WhatCar didn’t love the lack of physical buttons on the Touch Response MMI system found in the new Audi A8, there was enough they did like to give it the win. For instance, the Audi A8 had the nicest ride of the three, being the softest and most comfortable, which is what you want in a luxury limo after all. It also had the best build quality and the quietest cabin. Typically, those aren’t qualities we cherish, as we like performance cars, but in uber-luxury limos, they’re what matter most. So taking on the best in the business, the new Audi A8 takes the win over the juggernaut Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
