We’re just starting to get some more information on the upcoming B9 Audi A4 but Audi has just claimed that the upcoming 2017 A6 is currently under production and will lead the way for future Audis.
We all remember the Audi Prologue Concept from a while back. It was said to be the car in which all future Audis were based, stylistically. As it turns out, Audi first designed the next A6, A7 and A8 and took design cues from each car to create the Prologue Concept. So the Prologue is the future, as it’s comprised of three different future models. “We designed the new A6, A7 and A8, then put the essence of all three into the Prologue. Every element can be traced to the production car.” says Marc Lichte, Audi’s Design Chief.
The next Audi A6 will feature angular and aggressive LED headlights and O-LED taillights. It will also include the wide hexagonal single-frame grille and a flatter roof. The A6 will be very similar looking to the ultra-modern and angular Prologue concept, which could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your view. The Prologue drew mixed reviews, so if you liked the Concept, you’ll like the next A6.
The real good news about the exterior will be the size. Exterior dimensions will actually stay almost the same, but the wheelbase will be stretched as well as widened. This will create shorter overhangs and a better stance, making it look better and ride both more stably and comfortably. The new A6 will also be significantly lighter as well, as the new chassis uses a considerable amount of hot-formed high-strength steel, aluminum and carbon fiber.
Inside, the upcoming Audi A6 features quite a bit of technology, as you’d expect from the folks in Ingolstadt. The next A6 will feature three high-definition screens on the inside, one for the Virtual Cockpit, one on the dash for navigation and MMI information and one for features like air conditioning. The 2017 Audi A6 will also feature the latest local area network technology for continuous traffic and software updates. Make no mistake, Vorsprung Durch Technik will be alive and well in the new A6.
The interior will be considerably more spacious and have more trunk space, thanks to the stretched and widened wheelbase. The new A6 will have more trunk space than the current 530 and 565 liters, sedan and Avant respectively.
It’s said that the next A6 will be powered by a wide range of engines, including a couple of four-cylinders, a 3.0 liter V6 and a 4.0 liter V8 designed in-joint with Porsche and part of the new Komovo engine family. There will also be a wide variety of four, six and eight cylinder diesel engines as well as a plug-in hybrid model.
The next 2017 Audi A6 will be Audi’s most important model when it debuts, as it will set the tone for the next A7 and A8, as well as other future models. But it will be the first model to debut using the Prologue as its base. Hopefully, we’ll get a glimpse of what Audi’s been working on soon. It will meet stiff competition, though, as Jaguar has just released its new XF and both BMW and Mercedes-Benz are working on the new 5 Series and E Class, respectively. All we know is that we can’t wait to see it in the flesh.
