At the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, the new, second-generation Audi RS5 made its debut. It’s been hotly anticipated ever since fans saw the potential in the new B9-generation Audi A4’s chassis. Since seeing the new RS5, fans aren’t disappointed. Under its hood lies a 450 hp, 2.9 liter twin-turbo V6 engine. Coupled with an eight-speed automatic and Quattro all-wheel drive, the Audi RS5 can get from 0-60 mph in just 3.9 seconds.
Ten years ago, a 3.9 second 0-60 time was exclusive to cars with Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini badges. Now, a sports coupe with four seats that costs under $100,000 can crack the four-second barrier. It’s quite remarkable how far we’ve come, in terms of performance, and just how fast the Audi RS5 is. To put it into perspective, Car Throttle has put together a list of some cars that are slower to 60 mph than the new Audi RS5.
The first-gen Audi R8 V10 Spyder is one of them. That’s right, the most expensive car in Audi’s range just six years ago is slower than the current RS5. With its mighty 5.2 liter V10 engine and 525 hp, it took the V10 Spyder 4.1 seconds to clock 60 mph.
When I was a kid, the Lamborghini Diablo was the coolest car on the planet. It was the most revered supercar in the world. Its might mid-mounted V12 and fearsome name made the Diablo the stuff of legends. However, it could only muster 4.5 seconds to 60 mph.
Another childhood hero of mine is squashed by the new RS5 as well. Dodge’s might Viper of the ’90s was a wonderful and hateful thing. It had a massive 8.0 liter V10, which seems ridiculous now, and more power than its chassis, and especially rear tires, could handle. So it was a terfying thing to drive. Still, the RS5 pulls its pants down, as it could only get to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds.
The Audi RS5 is also faster than the C6 Audi RS6, a car beloved by car enthusiasts. That monster had a twin-turbocharged V10 engine and made 571 hp. Yet, 4.6 seconds was the fastest it could get to 60 mph.
There are a few more cars that the Audi RS5 is faster than on the Car Throttle list but we won’t spoil them all. But these are the highlights and it shows you just how fast the RS5 is. Admittedly, it isn’t the only car in its class that fast, as the BMW M4 Competition Package can do the same sprint, as can the Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe. But even more proof that we’re living in the golden age of performance cars.
