At the helm of one of Audi’s fastest and most extreme race car, the Audi R8 LMS, is Allen McNish, former Audi Le Mans driver. The car is on the race track at Portugal’s Portimao circuit and McNish is driving it like he wants to win. Now imagine you’re in the passenger seat. That would be one wild ride. Well that’s exactly what happened to Matt Kimberley, motoring writer at BT.com and you can watch the whole thing in first person.
Most people would love to get into the passenger seat of a regular Audi R8 with the Average Joe behind the wheel. Add in a former racing driver and even a standard R8 becomes a race car to the average person. But turn that R8 into an actual racing R8 and put it on a track and that experience becomes vastly different.
Having ridden shotgun with a racing driver in some pretty fast cars in my day, I can say that it’s one of the more fun experiences a gearhead can have. Because racing drivers have so much more confidence in the car and themselves and so much more skill than the average driver, they can get to, what seems like, ridiculous speeds on the track, turn in sharper and brake harder than you’d ever try yourself. It’s such a fun experience, especially in a car as capable as the Audi R8 LMS, because it’s so unlike what you can get out of a road car, either on the road or even on the track. It warps your mind.
So riding shotgun in an Audi R8 LMS on one of the world’s best racetracks is an absolute experience. It’s one that makes this particular motoring writer very jealous. But the closest thing we can get to Kimberley’s experience is watching the video above. Check it out.
