We know the Audi SQ8 is coming and, honestly, we already know what it’s going to look like. Audi has never really been adventurous with its styling, especially when going from standard ‘A’ or ‘Q’ models to sportier ‘S’ models. So we know that the SQ8 is going to look similar to the standard Audi Q8, just with some extra sport.
In this new spy video from Automotive Mike, we see an Audi SQ8 hitting the Nurburgring without any camouflage. Though the lack of camo isn’t all that revealing, as we already mentioned we know what it’s going to look like, it’s nice to see it roaming free.
It looks pretty good, the Audi SQ8. I said it when it first came out that the Q8 looks better the sportier it gets. The Audi Q8 is not exactly a pretty car, with its brutish face and gaping maw, but it does have an athletic profile and some nice angles, the latter two are accentuated as the car gets sportier. So the Audi SQ8, with its slightly lower ride height, more aggressive wheels and quad exhausts lend themselves well to the Q8’s original design.
One bit of embarrassment for this particular Audi SQ8 was when it was passed by a seemingly standard Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class going into a corner. Now, it’s likely that the SQ8 driver wasn’t pushing it hard and let the Mercedes-Benz test driver go by so he/she could push it. Still, it had to hurt a little bit to watch a rival brand drive a rival car and overtake on the track. Especially when the Audi driver was driving the sportier version of the Q8 while the Benz seemed fairly ordinary.
We’re excited about the Audi SQ8, though. The standard car is pretty sporty, so we expect the SQ8 to be even more fun. The regular Q8 in America gets the same 3.0 liter turbocharged V6 engine found in the Audi S4/S5, making 354 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. So we’re assuming that the Audi SQ8 might get the same 2.9 liter twin-turbo V6 found in the Audi RS5, which makes 450 hp and 443 lb-ft. That could be a lot of fun.
