SPIED: Audi SQ2 caught undisguised at the Nurburgring

As soon as we got word of the Audi Q2 crossover, we knew an SQ2, or even an RS Q2, would be in the pipeline. Each and every Audi model has an S or RS performance variant, something to add a bit more spice to the standard car. However, we never had any actual confirmation of such a performance variant for the Q2. Until now, that is.

While we don’t own the spy photos ourselves, some new ones have just been released of an undisguised Audi SQ2 running around the famous Nurburgring Nordschleife in Germany.

In keeping with typical Audi S models, this SQ2 is pretty reserved and not much more aggressive than the standard Audi Q2. The front air intakes are larger, the singleframe grille is blacked out, as is the C-pillar and the wheels are larger and more aggressive, all things pointing to an SQ2. However, typically Audi S models have chrome mirror caps and this one seems to have black contrasting mirror caps. Although, the Audi Q2 is a bit of an oddball, styling-wise, in the current Ingolstadt lineup, so it’s possible it ditches the chrome mirror for black ones. And, this is just a test mule, so some styling could change by production. However, the quad exhaust pipes are a dead giveaway for a high-performance model.

Audi Q2

We already knew the an Audi RS Q2 could be on the way in coming years, but we didn’t know an SQ2 would be coming so quickly. But it does make sense, considering the immense popularity of the Q2 right out of the gate, that Audi would consider a performance model.

The Audi SQ2 will likely pack the same 2.0 liter turbocharged engine as the new Audi S3, which now packs 306 hp, and it will be mated to the S-Tronic seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Currently, the most powerful engine is the 190 hp 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the standard Audi Q2, so the SQ2 will be a big bump up.
