SPIED: Audi S6 Avant caught doing some winter testing

This current-generation of Audi A6/S6 is getting seriously stale. While still handsome and dynamic enough, they both lack the quality, refinement, technology and performance to compete with the current crop of new luxury cars, such as the new Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7 Series. That will change soon enough, though, as Audi is currently working on a new variant and it’s set to be a significant improvement over the current, outgoing car.  The Audi S6 Avant variant was just caught doing some winter testing and we’re very excited about it. (We don’t own the spy photos but they can be seen here)

While the Audi A6 is the brand’s bread and butter, the Audi S6 is the one we’re excited for, especially in Avant form. It could come with the same 2.9 liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that you’d find in an Audi RS4 or RS5. Or it come with a detuned version of the same twin-turbo V8 we’ve seen in the new Audi RS7 and Porsche Panamera. Either way, expect more than 450 hp, which is about what the current car has.

From the outside, it doesn’t look that much different from either the Audi A8 or A4. Massive grille, angry headlights and slim new taillights are all key headlines but aren’t very dramatic looking. Having said that, its more staid looks will help it blend into traffic a bit more and make it more of a sleeper. Plus, that’s always sort of been Audi’s thing.

The best feature by far, though is its exhaust layout. Praise to the Car Gods that Audi actually gave the Audi S6 Avant proper exhaust tips and not fake black plastic panels. It looks so much better with actual exhausts that it’s a wonder Audi doesn’t do it with any of its other new cars.

Considering how dated this current-gen Audi S6 is, we’re very excited to see the new one. It may not have the thunderous noise of the current car’s 4.0 liter twin-turbocharged V8 but it will certainly be fast and likely be a performance upgrade. We’ll see when it finally debuts.
