We’ve seen a lot of spy photos and videos of the upcoming Audi S3 Sportback but we’ve actually seen very little of the S3 Sedan. While the Sportback is likely the better car of the two, the Sedan is more exciting for us enthusiasts in America because it’s the one we’ll actually get. Sadly, Sportback models never make it across the Atlantic. So when some new spy photos of the upcoming Audi S3 Sedan surface, we’re naturally quite excited. (We don’t own the photos but they can be seen here)
In these new spy photos, we see an Audi S3 Sedan that looks surprisingly quite a bit better than the current car. I say surprising for two reasons; one is that Audi’s designs are usually in slow to evolve and the second is that the car is wearing heavy camouflage. Despite the heavy camo, we can see a car that’s longer, wider and seemingly taller than the current car. Not only that but its new, sharply-creased shoulder line and overall shape help it look a bit more premium as well.
Up front, it gets similar headlights to the current car but it also gets a shorter, wider grille, larger front air intakes and a new lower front lip. Out back, new taillights similar to the A4 Facelift’s are present, as is a decklid spoiler. It might still be heavily camouflaged but it looks like it’s off to a great start.
We don’t have any word on powertrains but expect a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with around 300-ish hp. That engine will likely be mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and all-wheel drive. So it will be quick but don’t expect a huge bump in performance over the current car. Though, with its newest competitors; the BMW M135i and Mercedes-AMG A35; not making much more than that, it doesn’t really need any more performance.
What we’re hoping for is an upgrade in handling dynamics and fun. The Audi S3 is a great car at the moment but it’s a bit sedate. If the new car can just improve on driver engagement a bit, it will be extremely exciting.
