We’re well aware that Audi is currently working on a new generation of Q3. This is good news, as the current one is a bit “meh”, at best. In fact, we’re not fans of the Q3 at all. However, in its defense, it’s quite old and still based on the old MkVI Volkswagen Golf platform. This new one, though, will be based on Audi’s new, and excellent, MQB platform, the same one that underpins the Audi S3 and TT RS. So it should be considerably more dynamic and exciting. It should also be a lot more high-tech, as evidenced by the recent spy photos of the new Audi Q3 interior.
Inside the new Audi Q3, we can see that it gets the steering wheel from all other modern Audi SUVs, which looks good if not particularly new. It also has the new Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster from the Audi A8, which is even better than the first-gen unit that’s featured in almost all other Audis. It’s also pretty high-tech for a car in this segment, so it could be a segment-leader. The same goes for the new MMI system which is also seen.
Audi’s new generation of MMI system in the A8, A7 and A6 features two touchscreens, one for the infotainment system and one for HVAC controls. This Audi Q3 only has one touchscreen, for infotainment, while the HVAC controls are physical knobs. So it’s not uber-high-tech like the Audi A8 but it still gets the new, and excellent, touchscreen MMI and that’s a huge positive. It’s also quite a large screen, likely the same as the higher-end Audis, which makes it look even more massive in the smaller Q3’s cabin.
When you combine the Virtual Cockpit and new touchscreen MMI system, the Audi Q3 could be the most high-tech car in its class. We obviously won’t know how it will drive until it hits the road but at least we know it will feature some impressive tech.
