This current Audi A3 is one of the brand’s best selling cars, even though it’s getting a bit old now. In its class, it’s one of the oldest cars on sale and is starting to show its age, especially when compared to the brand-new Mercedes-Benz A-Class. So Audi needs a new A3 to stay relevant in the segment that’s being going to be flush with newer cars. Thankfully, a new Audi A3 is in the works and was just recently caught doing some winter testing. (We don’t own the photos but they can be seen here)
In these photos, we see the new Audi A3, along with a new Audi S3 Sportback, doing some winter testing in the snow and its design seems to be very evolutionary, rather than revolutionary. It looks very much like the current A3, though there are some key differences.
For instance, its Singlefram grille isn’t too different than the outgoing car’s but it’s more in keeping with the newer models’ and seems to have a wider bezel. Though, its headlights don’t look much different than the current car’s.
In profile, you can see that this new Audi A3 seems to take some styling cues from the Audi A1, with its fat C-pillar and more aggressively raked roofline. It also gets new taillights out back and (grrrrr) fake exhausts on the regular car. Although, the S3 gets quad pipes as it should.
As for engines, expect the upcoming Audi A3 to have similar powertrains to all modern small Audis. However, it’s said that there will be a plug-in hybrid variant based off of the Volkswagen Golf GTE.
With the new Mercedes A-Class and the upcoming BMW 1 Series, the new Audi A3 will have to be superb if it wants to compete. However, at least in terms of looks, it seems like it might have what it takes.
