Most people count down the days until the release of a new iPhone, the latest comic book film or new album. However, being the car nerds that we are, we’re counting down the days until the release of a new car. Not just any new car, though. We’re counting down the days until the most important and exciting Audi since the original R8 — the Audi e-tron GT.
The e-tron GT is going to debut on February 9, just seven days away. It seems like a million years ago that we first saw the Audi e-tron GT Concept, so the fact that it’s finally almost here is incredibly exciting. We don’t want to over-hype it, to save ourselves from any potential disappointment, but it’s hard not to add to the already fast-moving hype train.
As a legacy automaker, Audi is in desperate need of an electric halo car; something to bring EV customers to the brand and to draw its existing customers to its line electric e-tron models. The Audi e-tron GT has the potential to be that car when it debuts, just like the R8 was back in its day.
We don’t have exact specs on the Audi e-tron GT just yet but expect Porsche Taycan 4S levels of power, performance and range. So it’s likely that a 79.2 kWh battery pack powers two electric motors to make 522 horsepower, with an optional 93.4 kWh battery to make 563 horsepower. Expect 0-60 mph in the mid-to-high three-second range.
Those specs aren’t anywhere near as exciting as those offered by the Tesla Model S Plaid or Lucid Air Dream Edition but the Audi e-tron GT is going to be a car that’s more than the sum of its parts. Or at least Audi hopes. With stunning good looks, a futuristic interior and, hopefully, an excellent driving experience, the e-tron GT’s greatest commodity will be its desirability.
Just like the original Audi R8 before it, the Audi e-tron GT will be the car that brings customers into dealerships just to get a look at it and then buy something else, simply because of the association. Or at least that’s the goal. Either way, the e-tron GT will be the new halo car for the brand and the one that spearheads Audi’s electrified future. And we’ll see it in a week from today.
