Rear-Wheel Drive Audi R8 teased ahead of Frankfurt Motor Show

We recently learned that Audi Sport would be debuting some sort of rear-wheel drive car at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. It’s shocking news for Audi fans, as the four-ringed brand has never really produced rear-wheel drive cars. Admittedly, former Audi Sport boss Stephan Winkelmann did hint at such a car in the future, we just didn’t know it would come so quickly. Now we know that this rear-wheel drive car will be an upcoming Audi R8 variant that will debut in Frankfurt.

In a recent video posted to Audi Sport’s Facebook page, we can see what is clearly an Audi R8 doing some pretty epic donuts. They’re the sort of donuts that can only be done in a rear-wheel drive car, as the R8’s normal Quattro system would never allow such hooliganism, thanks to its impressive front-axle grip.

Will it be some sort of switchable rear-wheel drive system, where it’s normally all-wheel drive but can switch off its front axle, like the new BMW M5 and Mercedes-AMG E63? Or will it be a 100 percent rear-wheel drive Audi R8? We’re not sure but, either way, it means that the R8 will be able to power its rear axle only, which is incredibly exciting.

It will also be interesting to see if it gets a new engine. We’ve been hearing about an entry-level Audi R8 for awhile now and it would make sense to have a bit less power and less weight if it’s going to be rear-wheel drive. Though, this is a bit of a stretch.

The details don’t really matter to much though, do they? All we need to know is that there will be an Audi R8 that can smoke its rear tires, do sick burnouts and awesome donuts. Match that with what will likely be a 5.2 liter naturally-aspirated, mid-mounted V10 and the RWD Audi R8 could be the coolest supercar on the planet.
