Possible successor for Audi R8 LMS ultra caught on camera

We are not entirely sure what to make of this video but chances are this could be the first footage of a successor for the Audi R8 LMS ultra. The attached clip was recorded last month in Italy at the Monza circuit and shows not only the latest Audi R18 e-tron quattro but also a camouflaged prototype wearing a set of aerodynamic side mirrors as well as a huge rear wing.

The vehicle in question also boats a meaner-looking front bumper together with different side skirts and a ventilated rear end incorporating a significant diffuser. We can also spot the single windscreen wiper along with what appears to be a ventilated hood.

Regardless of what it is, chances are we will see it after the second generation road-going R8 which is expected to come out before the end of the year. The revamped range-topping Audi sportscar is set to receive uprated versions of the familiar 4.2-liter V8 and 5.2-liter V10 engines but wrapped in a body weighing up to 130 lbs (59 kg) less than the outgoing model.

In terms of design, the 2015 Audi R8 will adopt an evolution of the familiar angular design so it won’t stray away at all from the existing model but it will have larger air intakes, a quad exhaust system and a more aggressive front. A quattro AWD setup and Audi’s dual-clutch seven-speed gearbox should be part of the package.
