Porsche Cayenne Coupe to take on sibling Audi Q8

Audi has just revealed its new Q8 SUV, the most expensive, most premium and sportiest SUV in its range. The Audi Q8 will act as the brand’s flagship SUV and it will be the car that gets the best technology and luxury Audi has to offer. It should also be a popular SUV among customers in the segment, as it offers unique styling and one of the absolute best interiors on the market, regardless of price or segment. However, it will be entering dangerous waters, as the competition in that segment is fierce. Especially now that the Porsche Cayenne Coupe is going to enter the mix.

Porsche has been toying with the idea of a coupe version of its third-gen Cayenne SUV for about a year now. However, it seems that the brand has just greenlit production of it and it will make its debut next year.

According to Autocar, Porsche boss Oliver Blume has given the Cayenne Coupe the okay and Porsche will move forward with the car starting soon. It will obviously be based on the third-gen Porsche Cayenne, which itself is based on the Volkswagen Group’s MLB platform. It’s the same one, ironically, that the Audi Q8 is built on, as well as the Q7 and Porsche Panamera.

 

What’s interesting is that the Cayenne Coupe and Q8 will likely share a few engines. We’re hearing that the Porsche Cayenne Coupe will get a 2.9 liter twin-turbo V6 making 440 hp and a 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 making 550 hp. Those engines, while maybe not with the same power ratings, are used in the Audi S4 and upcoming Audi S8, respectively. So it’s likely that the Q8 will pack similar engines in the future.

With Porsche’s success and track record with the standard Cayenne, it wouldn’t surprise us if the Cayenne Coupe ends up being the sportiest SUV in the segment. The Audi Q8 will likely be a bit more luxurious and technology-laden, while the Cayenne Coupe will be the performance machine. Both brands seem to want to play nice with each other as of late, so rather than compete directly with each other, it’s likely that each brand stays in its own lane, in terms of how they make each of their cars.
